A few weeks ago, Bill Risser called to ask me if I’d like to schedule some time to be a guest on his podcast called The Real Estate Sessions. How the heck could I say no to that? Have you heard some of the super-smart people he has already interviewed? A pretty impressive list, for sure. All of the episodes are archived, so go take a look at some of the rock stars he’s already interviewed. I’ve been fortunate to meet almost every one of them over the years, and I know them to be some of the true leaders in our industry. So, I basically jumped at the opportunity to sit down with Bill to do my very first podcast. Yep, my first. Hopefully, it won’t be my last, but more on that a little later.
While I’d love for you to listen to the podcast, I thought it would be fun to cover a little bit of what we discussed.
We started out by talking about how I got interested / started in the real estate business and when I purchased my very first home.
That moved into some of my first real estate investing.
Of course, we spoke of my “contingency management” days when and where I had a LOT of fun selling hundreds of homes for some of the top home builders in Arizona.
We also spoke about the very first Real Estate Barcamp. I mentioned the “playing cards” from that first un-conference. The photo below might be kind of fun for people who were there and who know what a Real Estate Bar Camp is…

There was a point in my career when we didn’t know if this “internet thing” was going to stick around! It was fun to talk about when and how I got started being a geek and trying to figure out this whole blogging thing. Sure, I did some name dropping and mentioned some of the early pioneers in the digital media space.
We also spoke about my desire to work with like-minded people and to do everything we can to grow upon the relationships we have built with our most valuable asset, our past clients. This moved into what type of business we currently have and where we plan to be in the future. “I have not enjoyed real estate this much in my 23 years” of selling homes.
What the heck is this whole RailLife thing and where did it come from?
I like that Bill asked about building a business where a good web site can be beneficial to the agent and to their buyers and sellers. To me, that kind of stuff is a lot of fun to talk about!
One of the other things we HAD to talk about was the story behind our purchase of the Phoenix Real Estate Guy web site. We are certainly excited to see where the future of our business takes us and how we can continue to grow and improve.
None of us thinks the internet is going away.
Towards the end of the podcast, Bill asks me for one piece of advice for people looking to grow their real estate business. I hope you listened long enough to hear my answer.
So, here’s a link to “Episode 9 – Nick Bastian, Realty Executives” on The Real Estate Sessions. I hope you’ll check it out, as it was a lot of fun to take a walk down memory lane and to talk about some of the things I’d like to accomplish with my business in the future. The podcast is also available on iTunes or Stitcher.
Thanks for the invitation, Bill! I’m looking forward to following along and checking out future episodes of The Real Estate Sessions and maybe even returning with some friends…
